Dear Friend,

In the last dispatch we followed minerals out of the soil and into your blood, the salty ocean you carry inside. We covered Celtic salt. We covered soil. I promised you something harder this time. Here it is. Your teeth.

We treat teeth as a dental matter, filed away from the rest of medicine. That is a mistake. Your teeth are the only part of your skeleton you can see without a scan. They are a window onto the whole frame. And in the fight against inflammation, the mouth is not a side room. It is the front door.

The Smoke Detector You Can See.

A firefighter learns to read a building before stepping inside. Smoke at the door tells you what is happening in rooms you cannot see yet. The mouth works the same way. Bleeding gums, receding bone, a loose tooth: this is smoke. It reports on a fire of inflammation burning well beyond the jaw.

Minerals Are Teeth.

Here is the equation that ties to the previous issue 7. The trace minerals that drained out of our soil are the exact materials your teeth are built from. Calcium. Phosphorus. Magnesium and more. Enamel, the hardest substance your body makes, is almost entirely mineral. Deplete those minerals in the soil, deplete them in the plasma, and you are asking the body to build its hardest tissue on chronic shortage of essential raw materials. A body short on minerals slowly makes a withdrawal, and the teeth are one of the first to take a hit.

The Mouth Is the Front Door.

For my rheumatology patients this is personal. The bacteria of gum disease, above all Porphyromonas gingivalis, can switch on the very process that drives rheumatoid arthritis. They alter the body’s own proteins, and the immune system, no longer recognizing them, makes antibodies that cause chronic inflammation which wreaks havoc on all organs, like the heart, kidneys, and joints. The fire that ends in the joints can be lit in the gums.

And it does not stop at the joints. A 2025 study tracked the oral bacteria of roughly 122,000 adults and found that a high-risk mouth carried a more than threefold rise in pancreatic cancer. Read that again. The microbes on your gums, tracked to a cancer deep in the abdomen.

3.4× higher pancreatic-cancer risk

with a high-risk oral microbiome. Composite score across 27 oral species; odds ratio 3.44 per one standard-deviation increase (95% CI 2.63–4.51), in ~122,000 adults. JAMA Oncology, 2025.

This is the oral-systemic axis, and it reaches far past arthritis. Gum inflammation travels with heart disease, with diabetes, with blood sugar that will not settle. The mouth is not sealed off from the body. It drains into it, every minute of every day.

Your Mouth Is a Map of the Whole Body.

There is an older way of reading the mouth, and my work has always tried to hold it alongside the science. In traditional Chinese medicine and biological dentistry, each tooth sits on a meridian, an energetic pathway it shares with particular organs. The incisors travel with the kidney and bladder. The canines with the liver and gallbladder. The premolars and molars with the lungs, the large intestine, and the digestive organs. The wisdom teeth with the heart and small intestine.

A note on context: this meridian map is a complementary, educational lens, not a clinical diagnostic tool. Hold it as a way to keep the whole body in view, not as a verdict. What it shares with modern medicine is the heart of this whole series: the mouth is never separate from the body.

What the Hundred-Year-Olds Kept.

Look at the places where people reliably reach one hundred. The centenarians there share something easy to overlook: their own teeth. Chewing is how minerals and protein break down your food and get nutrition. A full set of teeth at ninety is not vanity. It is a longevity instrument, and a marker of a body that has stayed out of chronic inflammation for a very long time.

One Mouth. A Whole Body.

The firefighting starts close to home. Rebuild the raw materials first: the ocean salt and mineral-dense food from the last dispatch are also tooth food and bone food. Then guard the front door. Clean gently, daily, and reach what a brush cannot: a water flosser clears the spaces between teeth where the fire likes to start. Do these small things. Treat bleeding gums as the smoke alarm they are, not as a nuisance to be ignored.

A MOMENT OF REFLECTION

What Is Your Mouth Telling You?

Bleeding gums are a fire alarm. Have you been silencing an alarm instead of answering?

If the people who reach one hundred kept their own teeth, what are you doing today to keep yours for your lifetime?

Until next time, remember: you were built to last. Give your frame the minerals it was designed to have, guard the front door, and the body will keep its appointment with old age.
